The HESCO barrier castles were initially invented by British entrepreneur Jimi Heselden, a former miner, in the 1980s. In 1989, he established HESCO Bastions to promote and sell his patented product.

For instance, during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in New Orleans in 2005, a large number of HESCO barrier castles were used to resist the flooding from heavy rains.
